Britain’s exotic chillies
Chillies are perfect for giving any meal that little extra kick. Did you know that some of the world’s finest chillies are grown on these very shores? We are extremely proud of our chilli growers, based in and around the British Isles, from Jersey to Merseyside, and the extra lengths they go to ensure we get brilliant chillies.
Dealing with a delicate little thing like a chilli isn’t always easy in a climate as changeable as ours here in Britain. Luckily for us, our growers are always looking for different ways to innovate, whether that’s using computer-controlled irrigation to make sure we have healthy happy chillies, or introducing good insects to reduce the need for pesticides. The quest to grow the perfect chilli never stops.
Our chilli growers
Chillies are perfect for giving any meal that little extra kick. Did you know that some of the world’s finest chillies are grown on these very shores? Let’s meet our chilli growers…
Salvatore at Genovese Farms
The Genovese Farms have a strong Italian heritage and have been farming in Blunham, Bedfordshire, for generations. Genovese Farms now produce 10 million chillies a year, making them the UK’s largest provider. The Genovese family are constantly monitoring their environmental impact and continue the photosynthesis process at night with thermal screens, conserving the daytime heat and saving energy.
Debbie and Joe at Westshore Chillies
Joe and Debbie Johnson have been growing chillies for 14 years and they insist that only the best possible produce ends up on your dinner plate from their farm in Southport. They ensure that their produce is as fresh as it can be and are the only Sainsbury’s grower in the north of England.
Joe, Mike, Avril and Ed at Watts Farms
This family-run farm retains expertise that has passed down through the generations. Watts Farm in Kent is constantly looking for ways to innovate, whether that is growing the chillies in bags of coconut husk or being harvested and packed within 24 hours to ensure the best freshness and quality possible.
Charlie at Woodside Farms
And, on the beautiful island of Jersey, Charlie Gallichan and his family have 127 years of farming heritage to call upon. They operate a strict environmentally friendly farm to ensure that the chillies you enjoy are just as nature intended them: delicious. The Woodside farms are constantly looking to push the boundaries on what is possible and they recently introduced hydroponic production, a state of the art way of growing chillies that protects them from the often unforgiving and cold British climate. But, when the sun does choose to shine, up to 50% of the farm is now running on solar power.
